"Physical Fitness/ Health Consciousness/ Yoga Studies" Gulbarga University

      is a part of the Golden 
      Jubilee   celebrations,
the UGC organized a seminar on "Physical Fitness/          Health Consciousness/   Yoga Studies" at Gulbarga University from10-12 September,           2003.
The Seminar was inaugurated by Prof. V.N.Rajasekharan Pillai, the Vice Chairman, UGC on 10
th September. Prof. V.B. Coutino, Vice-Chancellor presided over the function. The Seminar was organized by the Dept. of physical education. About 100 delegates including sports students and atheletes participated in the seminar. Lectures and presentation on various themes covering physical education, positive health and sports medicine were made by eminent resources persons selected from different Universities and institutions.

Seminar on "Private-Public partnership in Higher Education", Calicut

 keynote address at the inaugural function of two-day UGC Golden Jubilee Seminar on "Private-Public partnership in Higher Education" at the University of Calicut on 27
th August, 2003 said that UGC aimed at a pattern of system change to meet the challenges in the 21st Century. The Universities would have to transform themselves into ‘knowledge factories’ linking education with economy. He remarked that in India education would remain a public good even though the role of private partnership in higher education could not be neglected. He added that the private entities which have enormous talent and resources need to be inducted to help the Universities to play their new roles. He also cautioned that ‘commodification of education’ with profit motive needs to be checked.
Dr. Syed I Hasnain, Vice Chancellor of the University, in his inaugural address opined that higher education had become very expensive and

efforts should be made to mobilize money from those who could afford it and channelise it towards the weaker sections of the society. Prof. V. Krishna Kumar, Convenor of the Seminar presented the theme paper and Prof. T.K Ummer, Registrar, gave the vote of thanks.
In the technical sessions, eminent educationists and academics presented papers on various aspects of the theme - Prof. A. Gnanam on "Public/Private Investments on Higher Education – changing perceptions", Prof. A. Achyuthan on "IT for training a large number of professionals economically-concept of VIT", Dr. M. Ekbal on "General Agreement on Trade Services in the education sector", Prof. M.V. Pylee on "Financial crisis in Universities" and Prof. Kalro on "Modern management techniques in Higher Education". The Valedictory session of the seminar was chaired by Dr. Amrik Singh.

ORIENTATION PROGRAMMES AND
     REFRESHER COURSES IN INFORMATION
     TECHNOLOGY

       ith   a   view  to  giving  an  enhanced   thrust in e-contents and to
      enable  teachers  to be familiar  with  the  use  of  various  tools to
create e-contents creators and assemblers, the University Grants Commission is supporting the 51 Academic Staff Colleges (ASCs) for the conduct of orientation programmes and Refresher Courses in IT-enabled teaching and learning. To achieve this objective, five pilot programmes in IT are being conducted for teacher trainers in 5 ASCs at Goa University, Jadavpur University, Madras University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Guru Nanak Dev University. ASC Directors and resource persons from IT areas from different universities are providing the necessary expertise. During the 2003-04 academic session, over 100 Orientation Progammes and Refresher Courses in Information Technology are scheduled.
