Refresher Course in Defence Studies

       course in Defence Studies
was organized at CCS University, Meerut from 8
th September to 3rd October, 2003. The course was inaugurated by Prof. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chairman, UGC on 8th September, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. Lt.General O.P. Kaushik, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd.) delivered the key note address. The course was

co-ordinated by Prof. Harvir Sharma, UGC Emeritus Professor. This provided a common platform for direct interaction between senior officers drawn from the various services of the Armed Forces and teachers of Universities. The theme of the course was "Impact of Science and Technology in the Armed Forces".

Result of UGC-NET June, 2003

         Commission has declared the result of NET Examination held on 29
th June, 2003 for the award of Junior Research Fellowships and to determine the eligibility for lectureship. Out of 73,738 candidates who appeared in this test, 1,644 have been declared eligible for lectureship and 365 for the award of Junior Research Fellowship. The result is also available on UGC website www.ugc.ac.in. The next NET examination will be conducted on 21st December, 2003.

UGC has given accreditation to the M.S. University of Baroda, Vadodara and MP Professional Examination Board, Bhopal to conduct two State Level Eligibility Tests (SLETs) respectively for the states of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. UGC has also accorded all India accreditation for Gujarat SLET in the subject of Gujarati. Earlier, Maharashtra-Goa SLET was given all India accreditation in the subject of Konkani.

Enhanced Support for Major and Minor Research Projects

         he     University    Grants
        Commission   has   raised
the assistance level for Major and Minor Research Projects from Rs. 7 lakhs to Rs. 12 lakhs for Major Research Projects in Sciences including Engineering & Technology, Medicine, Pharmacy and Agriculture and Rs. 10 lakhs for Major Research Projects in Humanities, Social Sciences, Languages, Literature, Arts, Law and Allied disciplines. The ceiling for Minor Research Projects

has been raised to Rs. one lakh from Rs. 50,000. The Expert Committee meetings to evaluate fresh Major Research Project proposals and to evaluate the progress of the on-going projects will be held in the month of November, 2003.
The UGC has also revised the guidelines for Major and Minor Research Projects for X Plan period. These guidelines have been circulated to all the Universities and are also available on UGC website www.ugc.ac.in.

UGC CELEBRATES
HINDI PAKHAWARA-2003

The University Grants Commission celebrated Hindi Diwas on 10th


September, 2003 in Gandhi Memorial Hall, New Delhi. The Chairman, Prof. Arun Nigavekar inaugurated the programme. Prof. Ved Prakash, Secretary, Dr. N.K.Jain, Additional Secretary and Dr. Pandey S.K.Sharma, Senior Library and Information Officer were also present. In his inaugural address, the Chairman outlined the

address, the Chairman outlined the comparative position of Hindi alongwith other languages. Dr. N.K. Jain impressed upon the officers and the staff to do more work in Hindi. The function was well attended by the staff members of the UGC. Certificates and cash prizes were distributed by the Chairman and the Secretary to the winners in different competitions which were organized by the ‘Rajbhasha Anubhag’ of the University Grants Commission during August- Septemebr 2003. Noted Hindi poets, Sh. Surinder Sharma, Sh. Arun Jamini, Sh. Ved Prakash and Sh. Vimal Vibhakar recited their poetry in the function.The Hindi Pakhawara ( Fortnight), is celebrated each year by the UGC from 1-14th September and Hindi Diwas function is organized on one of these days during the fortnight.
