    the ICDL (International Conference
   on    Digital     Libraries)   2004,   in 
   partnership        with      Department
   of   Culture,   Ministry   of   Tourism
   and Culture,  Government  of   India,
   on         ‘Knowledge          Creation,
   Preservation,         Access         and
   Management’ from  24-27,February
   2004. Commonwealth   Educational
   Media Centre  for Asia  (CEMCA)/
   The   Commonwealth   of   Learning
   (COL)   is   also    associated    with
   this  event.
   The     Conference   will  be a  major 
   forum   focusing   on  digital  libraries
   and   related    technologies,  policies,

  
     and related issues. About 500 
    delegates    including    policy 
    planners,        library       and
    information   professionals, IT 
    professionals,        knowledge   
    managers   and   professionals 
    from electronic publishing and  
    virtual  electronic communities 
    from   all  over  the  world are

Remembrances

                   
                      The UGC family lost some of its valued members.

    Shri N.S. Kohli, Despatch Rider, passed away   on   6th April, 2003. 
   He served the organization for nearly 40 years.

    Shri Hari Mohan, Peon, passed away on 7th June, 2003. He served 
    the  organization for over 21 years.

    Shri   Babu  Lal,  Chowkidar,  passed away on 27th June, 2003. He 
    served the organization for nearly 30 years.

    Ms. Eva  Baugh,  Section  Officer,  passed  away  on  26th   August, 
    2003.She served the UGC for over 33 years.

    Dr. Vijay  Prakash Joshi, Senior Statistical Assistant, passed away 
    on 29th August, 2003. He served the organization for over 20 years.

     Shri    Kula    Nand,   Bearer,  passed  away  on 5th October,2003.
    He served the organization for nearly 18 years.

 

CEC celebrating two decades of CWCR

       he    Country  Wide Class Room
       (CWCR)    programme   of   the UGC operated  through 6 universities, is completing  2 decades  of activities in January, 2004. The Inter-University Centre, Consortium   for  Educational Communication   (CEC),  set  up   in  1993   coordinates   these    activities  now. The objectives of the   CEC are:

u
Close   co-ordination,    facilitation, overall guidance and the  activities of Media Centres set up by the UGC in various universities.
u
Dissemination       of     educational programmes,     through     both    the broadcast and non-broadcast modes.
u
Production        of        educational audio-visual programmes and related support    material    and  appropriate facilities.
u
Research related to optimization of the activities.
u
Providing  a  forum  for  the  active involvement of academics and experts from  educational technology for  the  production         of           appropriate educational  programmes.
There     are    7    Educational Media Research   Centres (EMRCs) and 10 Audio    Visual    Research    Centres (AVRCs)        now.        UGC-CEC programmes    are    transmitted   via INSAT satellite and are further being telecast   on   about  1150 Terrestrial Transmitters    of    the  Doordarshan covering      87%         of         Indian population.   The  CEC packages the programmes  produced by the Media Centres,   in   the   form  of  half-hour capsules     and   supplies  for  regular telecast    over    Doordarshan.    The number     of    hours   of  telecast  of education   films   on  national channel has increased upto 6 hours daily. The focus     of     education    films   is on enrichment-oriented   films,   subject- related       series    of     films,     and undergraduate course-based lectures by eminent teachers.
The      CEC     has  a  repository  of software of nearly 13000 educational films   in   these   categories.  Besides telecasting   the   films,   CEC  makes available  VHS/CDs for programmes telecasted   on DD National Channel and    Gyan   Darshan,  DD Bharti on demand.  CEC  also  provides  these CDs       to    several   national    and international     institutes    of    higher education.
