Guru Nanak
Dev University, Amritsar received the
most prestigious
Maulana Abul
Kalam Azad Trophy for the year 2001-02
for the best
performance
in sports
amongst the
Universities in
the country.
This is for a
record 17th
time that the
University has
bagged this
award, emer-
ging as the
Best Sports
University in
the Country.
The President
of India, Dr.
A. P. J.
Abdul
Kalam presented this
coveted trophy to
Dr. S.P. Singh, Vice- Chancellor,
in the investiture ceremony
held at
Ashoka Hall, Rashtrapati Bhawan
on 29th
August 2003. The citation read on

this occasion says: "Guru
Nanak
Dev University has
the rare distinction of having
received the
Maulana
Abul Kalam Azad Trophy on 17 occasions
out of 26 years
of the University’s inception.
The
Vice-
Chancellor, the
teachers and students of the
University
deserve high
appreciation
for their

endeavour".
Maulana Abul
Kalam Azad Trophy, named
after the
first Education
Minister of
India, was
instituted in
1956-57 and is a
running trophy
awarded to the
University
showing all-
round best
performance in
sports. The UGC
has identified
Guru Nanak Dev
University as the
"Centre
of
Excellence in
Sports
Sciences"
in the year 2001.
The
University has so
far
produced
24
Arjuna Awardees
in
various sports disciplines.

New Campus for UGC
she
Commission has
constituted a committee
under the Chairmanship of Prof. V.N.Rajasekharan
Pillai, the Vice Chairman, UGC, Prof. Sureshwar Sharma and Prof.
Briz-Kishore, Commission Members and Dr. Dev Swarup, Deputy Secretary to
co-ordinate and review the progress of the project for the construction of
new UGC building complex. An amount of Rs. 30 crore has been allocated in
the budget for the construction of new campus.

he Department of Adult
Education and Extension of the H.N.Garhwal
University has been
awarded the prestigious NLM-UNESCO Award 2003 for its
outstanding contribution in the
field of Literacy and
Adult Education. Shri Manohar Joshi, Hon’ble
Speaker of Lok Sabha presented the
award to Dr. N. Natarajan, Vice
Chancellor on 8th September, 2003 at a function held
at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
