SPECIFICATION OF DEGREES
NEW DELHI, March, 2014
NO. F. 5-1/2013 (CPP-Il)--ln exercise of the powers conferred by sub-Section (3) of
Section 22 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956) and in supersession of
all earlier Gazette Notifications pertaining to specification of degrees, the University Grants
Commission (UGC) with the approval of the Central Government hereby specifies the
nomenclature of degree for the purposes of the said section.
SPECIFIED DEGREES
Broad discipline-wise nomenclatures of degrees at all levels of higher education should
be taken as the specified degrees, which the universities/Institutions must adhere to, are given
below. Alongside the nomenclature of the degrees, minimum entry-level qualifications and
duration of the programmes have also been indicated. The information is presented in a tabular
form for clarity. In the bottom-most row of each table, nomenclatures of degrees that are
presently in vogue in some institutions were found to be neither conventional, nor reflective of
a real innovation in knowledge and are de-specified with the suggestion that the same may be
restructured/changed as suggested therein.
