FAKE UNIVERSITIES
With a view to cautioning people about the various fake universities/ institutions, the UGC has released the list of 18 such self styled universities/ institutions. Clause 23 of the UGC Act prohibits the use of word ‘University’ and interalia states that “No institution, whether a corporate body or not, other than a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act shall be entitled to have the word ‘University’ associated with its name in any manner whatsoever”. The UGC has been advising aspiring students from time to time not to pursue education in such institutions as they are not empowered to award degrees.
