Based on the recommendations
of the Expert Committees, the UGC has accreditated Guru Jambeshwar
University, Hisar and University of Pune for conducting State Level
Eligibility Test (SLET). At present, there are 11 states which
are either conducting SLET or their proposals
are in the pipeline. The examinations for SLET
are held on the pattern of National Eligibility Testing (NET) – a
National Level Examination conducted by the UGC in 76 subjects in
humanities, social sciences, languages and so |
sciences like Electronic
Science, Computer Science and Environmental Science. NET in science
subjects is conducted jointly with the CSIR. For Indian nationals
abroad, the UGC also conducts NET in 6 foreign countries, viz., UK,
USA, Australia, China, Egypt and UAE. Recently, the UGC has constituted
an Expert Committee to review NET and SLET scheme and suggest measures
for its improvement. |

Special Assistance

which have shown evidence of potential in research and teaching, the
UGC has a 3tier system of providing financial assistance – the Special
Assistance Programme (SAP). The scheme was started in 1963 as the
Centre of Advance Study (CAS). Subsequently, in 1972 and 1977, the
second and third level of support were |
xtended as the “Department
of Special Assistance (DSA) and ‘Departmental Research Support (DRC)
– respectively. As on 31st March, 2003, the UGC is assisting 144 departments
in Humanities, 206 in Sciences and 48 in Engineering and Technology.
During the X Plan, UGC will provide an assistance of 50-100 lakhs
to such departments. |

· Professors Sureshwar Sharma, former Vice-Chancellor,
Rani Durgawati Vishwavidyala, Jabalpur and B. H.Briz Kishore, Chairman
of National Council of Rural Institute have been appointed as Commission
Members for another term of three years.
· Prof. P.N. Tandon, former Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences,
New Delhi, has been appointed as Commission Member for a term of three
years.

Sh. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Vice-President
of India on May 25, 2003 released the book entitled “Good Governance and
Ancient Sanskrit Literature” written by Dr. (Mrs.) Aruna Goel, Member
Commission and Professor of Sanskrit at Panjab University, (Picture Courtsey
: Press Information Bureau) · Prof. V.S. Prasad, the Vice-Chancellor of
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad and former Pro–Vice-Chancellor
and Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)
has been appointed as the Director of National Assessment and Accreditation
Council (NAAC) for a period of five years. · Prof. Jayant Narlikar handed
over the directorship of Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics
(IUCAA) to his long time colleague and friend Prof., Naresh Dadhich on
July 4, 2003. Being the founder Director, since 1988, Prof. Narlikar contibuted
immensely to the growth of the IUCAA.
