G.D Birla Award for IUCAA Scientist

         rof.      Thanu  Padmanabhan,
         Dean, Inter University Centre
for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune has been awarded the thirteenth G.D. Birla award for Scientific Research for the year 2003. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.1.5 lakhs and is awarded 

by the K.K. Birla Foundation since 1991. Prof. Padmanabhan has been awarded this prize for significant contribution in several areas of theoretical physics and cosmology. IUCAA is an autonomous Inter university Center of  the UGC



Prof. S.K. Talapatra, President of the Indian Chemical Society; Prof. Ramesh Chandra, Vice Chancellor, Bundelkhand University and President Elect, Indian Chemical Society; Prof. S.P. Singh, Kurukshetra University and Chairman, the UGC Chemistry Curriculum Development Committee; and Prof. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chairman, UGC at the inaugural function of the 40th Annual Convention of the Indian Chemical Society held at Bundelkhand University, Jhansi during 23rd to 27th December, 2003.

Prof. Arun Nigavekar conferred Honour of Delhi Ratan

       rof.  Arun  Nigavekar, Chairman,
       University Grants Commission has been conferred with "State Intellectuals Honour Delhi Ratan" on 2nd November, 2003 at ICCR, Azad Bhavan, New Delhi by All India Conference of Intellectuals (a Registered Society), which is a purely non-political NGO committed to the cause of Humanism, Nationalism and Peace. Prof. Nigavekar has been recognized for his talent and service to the society in the field of higher education.

Financial Adviser

          hri Pawan Agarwal  has joined
          UGC as Financial  Adviser  on
                        November 10, 2003.
                        He   is  an  officer  of
                        1985 batch  of  West
                        Bengal Cadre  of  the
                        I.A.S. Earlier  he  had
                       worked  as    Director
                       (Technical  Education)
in the Ministry of HRD in the Government of India. He was in-charge of the Central Universities in the Ministry during 1998-99. Shri Agarwal has also worked as Principal Secretary in the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, Collector & District Magistrate and in the Departments of Urban Development and Education. His areas of interest are use of information and communication technologies in education, regulatory framework for higher education, role of technology in human capital formation, life-long learning, community information systems and education services in the market place.
