New Emblem for UGC

           he   Union   Minister    for     Human     Resource
           Development,    Science   &   Technology     and
Ocean Development, Prof. Murli  Manohar
Joshi  released  the  new  UGC logo  at the 
concluding function of Golden Jubilee Year 
of the University Grants Commission   held 
on 28th December, 2003 at Vigyan Bhavan,
New Delhi.
Sixteen Institutions-  colleges,  departments 
of  Arts  and  Fine  Arts  in universities took 
part in the exercise for the 
designing of the new logo 
for   the   UGC.   All   the 
institutions                held 
competitions among  their 
students    and  sent  best 
entries  to  the UGC. The 
UGC   received  a   total 
370     entries.   A   three 
member               Expert 
Committee consisting  of 
Prof. Jeram Patel, former 
Dean and Head   of   the 
Department   of  Applied 
Arts    at    the         M.S. 
University, Vadodara, Dr. 
Rajeev Lochan, Director 
of the National Gallery of 
Modern Art and Mr. Nand Katyal, former Art Director of Span magazine, who is closely associated with the Lalit Kala Akademi at Garhi, in Delhi, went through all the entries and selected five entries. Further  3-day 

workshop was organised at M.S. University, Vadodara. The five short listed designers interacted with the senior 
                      designers and modified their designs in the
                      light    of    suggestions     and    prepared
                      variations of the selected designs. Finally,
                      30     entries    emerged.   A   Committee
                      comprising    Prof.   V.N.   Rajasekharan
                      Pillai,       Prof.     B. N.   Tandon,   Prof.
                      B.H. Briz-Kishore,   Prof.  Vasant Gadre
                      and       Prof. (Mrs.)       Aruna       Goel,
                                               (Commission  Members)
                                               considered                the
                                               suggestions  and opinions
                                               of     other   Commission
                                               Members,   officers  and
                                               staff  of   the   UGC  and
                                               finally      selected      the
                                               design    by   Ms.   Priya
                                               Jayanand,   a   final  year
                                               student   of   College   of
                                               Fine                       Arts,
                                               Thiruvanan  -  thapuram.
                                               The   motto  line   "Gyan
                                               Vigyan            Vimuktye
                                              (Knowledge   Liberates),
                                               was  suggested  by  Prof.
                                              (Mrs.)    Aruna  Goel.   It
                                               captures   the essence of
knowledge and learning, besides reflecting the UGC's role of promoting excellence in higher education and holistic development of individuals.

Namibian Delegation at UGC

A Namibian delegation led by Prof. Lazarus Hangula, Acting Vice-Chancellor Namibian National University, Windhoek visited Universty Grants Commission on 12th January, 2004 to discuss Higher Education in India and explore the possibility of academic linkage between the University of Namibia and Indian Institution of Higher learning. Prof. Geoffray E Kiangi, Acting Pro-VC (Academic Affairs & Research), Prof. P. G. Reddy, Technical Advisor, R. M. Mbetjiha, Director strategic planning are also seen.

Prof.(Ms) Armaity Desai, former Chairperson, UGC, Prof. Arun Nigavekar, Chairman, Prof. V.N.Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chairman, Prof. Ved Prakash,Secretary, Dr. N.K.Jain, Joint Secretary, Dr.(Mrs.) Asha Kiran, Deputy Secretary with Ms. Priya Jayanand who designed new logo for UGC.
