Indian educationists like Prof. Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar, Prof. C.D. Deshmukh, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Rabindranath Tagore and C.V. Raman. He also declared a new scheme of Professor of Eminence, which will be implemented from this year onwards in the university system.
The Minister while releasing the new UGC logo said “the new logo reflects the contemporary nature of the challenging task that UGC has undertaken. It is good that they have now a motto line- “Gyan Vigyan Vimuktye” (Knowledge Liberates). It is knowledge that liberates the humans and it is humans that create knowledge. So we must worship knowledge. But knowledge without moral and ethical dimension is of no value. This is the strength of the Indian culture and it must be blended in our higher education”.
The Minister also announced the establishment of four National Institutes of Sciences at Bhubaneshwar, Allahabad, Pune and Chennai.
Dr. Vallabh Bhai Ramjibhai Kathiria, Hon’ble Minister of State for Human Resource Development, in his address congratulated the UGC for completing 50 years of meaningful existence and reviving new concepts and culture in higher education. He said, “Education is now a tool that helps a nation to enhance its strategic position in a very competitive world. The nation that has accepted more open and flexible policies in higher education is a nation that |
would go ahead and become a strong nation eventually”. On this occasion, he also released a volume entitled “50 years of UGC”.
Shri Ashok Pradhan, Hon’ble Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology, congratulated the UGC for managing higher education well. He said, “the education has become a pivot for development. It is because of this that each nation strives to build
sound educational system. Indian higher education system has not only passed the test of time but is now ready to venture into new challenges that are emerging in this century. The new challenges have direct link with the social aspirations of the masses. And the social aspirations of the masses demand clever approaches for meeting the larger number of students”. Shri S.K.Tripathi, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development (Dept. of Secondary & Higher Education) said that “Globalisation should lead to sharing of knowledge and not in creating of divide between those who have knowledge and those who do not have knowledge. He appreciated UGC programmes to address the issues of access, relevance and quality and said, “the UGC Network experiment appears to be the biggest cost effective communication network that India has set up for higher education”.
Prof. Arun Nigavekar, Chairman, UGC in his welcome address said that in the globalizing environment we should not be held hostage to excessive marketisation and commodification of higher education. Instead, the education must embrace the intellectual, cultural, social and moral as well as ethical development of individuals, institutions and nations. He informed about the initiatives taken by the UGC to make higher education relevant and at par with the global competitiveness. He mentioned particularly the efforts of UGC for broadening access by blending conventional education with distance education to attract young members from disadvantage groups in the main stream of higher education and providing remedial support; introducing flexibility to pursue both degree and utility-oriented certificate/diploma programmes
